Another week closer to the beginning of school. Miller Grove’s “Meet the Teacher” night will be Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to meet their teachers for the upcoming school year and get familiar with their rooms and

where everything is located across the campus. I would encourage everyone to come out and network with other families and school staff to help the beginning of school to turn out as smoothly as possible and to get to know all of the folks that will be working with your children throughout the year.

At 6 p.m. on Aug. 27, there will be a banquet for the newly formed National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Rains Chapter. The banquet will be held at the Best Western in Emory located on highway 69 near Brook shire's. Kim Potts told me that they are trying to recruit new members for their chapter, named “Rains County Struttin’ and Ruttin’.” Big Smith’s BBQ will be catering the event and anyone is welcome to attend. Price of the meal, as well as a one year membership to the federation, will cost $55 per person. Along with the meal there will be a silent auction, a live auction, and various raffles. Kim told me that the auctioneer is pretty entertaining too, so it might be worth the money just to eat the meal and see the floor show! For more information you can contact Kim Potts at 903-348-1845.

Seems like we have had several people with ties to the community that have passed away recently. I heard that Margaret Ann (Hatcher) Marable passed away last week. She was born Jul. 11, 1931, in Huntsville, the daughter of Doc and Trudie Hatcher. She passed on Aug. 8 and was laid to rest in Restlawn Memorial Park on Aug. 11, 2013. She is survived by her husband, A.C. Marable, a son and a daughter. Margaret Ann was also a 1949 graduate of Miller Grove School.

Linda (Wise) Maeker emailed me last week to inform me of the death of her aunt, Bernice Evelyn (Pipkin) Long. She passed away on Aug. 8, in Lubbock. Bernice was born in Hopkins County on Oct. 21, 1925, the sixth of nine children born to Grover and Belva (Fleenor) Pipkin. Bernice graduated from Miller Grove High School in 1944 and married J.W. Long on July 15 of that same year. She is preceded in death by her husband in 2003 and is survived by two children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Happy birthday this week to Kathy Wren on Aug. 20; Leanne Bryant on Aug. 22; Ruby (Ferguson) Long on Aug. 23; and Kyle Crow, Linzy Harland and Darin Petty on Aug. 24.      Happy 21st anniversary to Monty and Vanessa (Boss) Tipps on Aug. 22. Aug. 23 will be Fred and Ann (Kernes) Moseley’s 44th wedding anniversary; congratulations to them!

As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
