This is such a busy time of year, not just for Miller Grove but, for everyone everywhere. Saturday my mother and I went to see a cousin, Kyle Crow, graduate from Lone Oak High School. Their graduation seemed a little odd to me. It was at 11:30 a.m. and it was held in Ferguson Auditorium at Texas A&M University-Commerce. But, it was a nice ceremony and was over by 12:15 p.m. I was surprised during the ceremony to look over and see Gay Nell Walls and her daughters, Claudia and Debbie. I guess they had a relative graduating that day, too.
After church Sunday, I watched my niece, Savanna, perform at her dance recital at the Civic Center. There were so many folks there. All of the dancers did very well.
Happy birthday this week to Jace Potts and Billy Lynn on May 27; and Justin Scott, Jay Lynn Southerland and Kathy Lennon on May 29.
Happy sixth anniversary to Derick and Karyn Petty on May 26. Happy 32nd anniversary to Stephen and Fran Sparks on June 1.
This Friday, May 31, will be Miller Grove’s Annual End of School Stew. It’s a tradition that has been going on for many years, so please come out and enjoy a bowl of stew and some desserts. We will have a donation jar sitting out to help offset the cost of ingredients. I encourage everyone to come, visit and enjoy the day. Stew will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Later that afternoon, there will be a seniors versus faculty softball game (around 2 p.m.) and anyone is welcome to come and watch. It could be pretty humorous!
Friday night, there will be two alumni basketball games at the gym. There will be one boys game and one girls game. I hope we will have several folks to come out and cheer on both teams of Hornets, past and present.
Saturday, June 1 will be a reception to honor Richard Watson before he retires from MG school at the end of this school year. Stew will be served for the folks that come out to celebrate and congratulate him on the ending of his career and welcome him into the world of retirement. Guests will be welcomed from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brashear Baptist Church Family Life Center. Oh, and don't forget that this is a surprise!
Sunday will be Miller Grove High School’s baccalaureate services at the Miller Grove Methodist Church. Services will begin at 6 p.m.
My cousin Hunter Darrow proposed to his girl friend, Tiffany Goldsmith, Monday when she went to see him in Hawaii. And, of course, she said yes! So, there is one more cousin to add to the plethora of kinfolk that I have.
My last bit of news is on a personal note. I will be starting a new job on Monday, June 10. I have taken a customer service job with Farmer’s Electric Coop at their Greenville office. They were kind enough to let me finish the school year with the students before I begin my new job, and I am so appreciative of that. I’m pretty excited and ready to start a new chapter in my life. Of course, I will miss the students at MG terribly. I have been on the campus each year since I started school in kindergarten in 1988. It has been my second home for 25 years. But, I think all of you know me well enough to know how much I care about the school and that I will still do my best to be active in the goings-on of our district.
