Congratulations to each of the winners at the North East Texas Livestock Association Junior Market Livestock Show. A lot of hard work has gone into buying, working with, feeding and

grooming the animals that are shown each year. Miller Grove agriculture teacher Richard Watson told me Monday that our students took over $60,000 of the money awarded from the Sale of Champions. I thought that was great! We at Miller Grove have several students that are interested in showing animals and two ag teachers that work hard to help our students succeed.
Friday night’s basketball game was the final court action of the season. Our MG Hornets played well, but Ector overpowered us with an ending score of 69-59. Congratulations to our basketball boys for walking away at the end of the season with the title of bi-district champs!
Please be in prayer for Halston Potts and family. Halson and Pamela’s baby made a surprise entrance into this world on Friday, four months earlier than expected. The baby is in a Dallas hospital and was born weighing just over one pound. I know the family would appreciate everyone’s prayers that the baby continues to be healthy.
Sunday morning, I received word that long-time MG teacher and community member, Harace Hammonds, had passed away in the early morning hours. His health had been failing for quite some time. He was living near the town of Simms, Texas, near his daughter and son-in-law. He was born Harace Eldon Hammond on Aug. 21, 1933, in Sulphur Springs. His father was Baptist preacher Avery Hammond of the Divide community. After obtaining his teaching degree, Mr. Hammond also became a pastor. He taught school and pastored in Alabama as well as in Hopkins County. He retired from Miller Grove School in 1998 after serving the district as sixth grade teacher for 19 years. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Chapelwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Chapelwood Memorial Gardens in Texarkana. Mr. Hammond is survived by his wife, Velma Lemon Hammond; two daughters; two brothers; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
