Last week, I accidentally left out a couple of very important birthdays. Happy belated birthday to Floyd “Demp” Sturdevant, who turned 83 on Feb. 12, and Gay Nell (Luther) Walls, who turned 84 on Feb. 14.
Josh and Tega George welcomed their new son into the world on Feb. 5. Cason Dax George weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 21 inches long. His grandparents are Mark and Donna George of Miller Grove. Great-grandparents are Gene and Patsy George of Brashear and Kenneth and Jennie Gaines of Cumby. Cason’s aunt is Rebecca George. Josh graduated from Miller Grove High School in 2003 and is now living with his wife and son in Pennsylvania. Congratulations to their family.
The varsity basketball boys lost their warm-up game Friday night in Tyler by only two points. I heard that the game went into overtime. I didn’t make the trip to Tyler that night. I believe they will play a play-off game this Friday vs. Ector at Celeste, 7 p.m. Friday.
Saturday was the big M.G. International stock show at the roping arena. This show is a “warm-up” for this weekend’s North East Texas Livestock Association Market Show at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center. Lots of work went into getting everything ready for this show and some businesses even helped by being sponsors. The MG FFA Chapter would like to publicly thank Joey and Lisa Daugherty for letting the FFA use the MG roping arena for the show. It is so much nicer than having to use the ag shop like we have done in the past. Another “thank you” goes out to the stew cook, Lewis Russell. He’s always good to volunteer to make a big pot of stew that is seasoned to perfection.
I regret to report that H.C. Akins passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 17. H.C. was born Jun. 30, 1921, in Miller Grove, the fourth child of Albert Braxton Akins and Mattie Mae (Burns) Akins. H.C. was truly one of the best Christian men I have ever known in my life. He served on the cemetery’s board for several years and was always an integral part of the runnings of the Miller Grove Methodist Church. He married Mary Lou Ferguson on Nov. 25, 1943, in Miller Grove. He also served in the armed forces during World War II. Funeral services were to be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Miller Grove Methodist Church. Visitation was one hour prior to the services. Interment was to follow in Miller Grove Cemetery. H.C. was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Lowry; his parents; and four brothers, Albert Akins, Fred Akins, LeRoy Akins and Freeman Akins. He is survived by his wife of 69 years; one daughter, Carol Dunn and husband, Billy; one sister, Mildred Wheat; four grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Happy birthday this week to Davy Moseley and Duane Garrett on Feb. 17, Chris Mynatt and Tanya (Middleton) Potts on Feb. 19, Gail (Prater) Darrow on Feb. 20, Kelly Mabe on Feb. 22, and Linda (Waskom) Crockett and Shelly (Ragan) Crow on Feb. 23.
Happy 54th wedding anniversary to William and Bertha (Davis) Sparks on Feb. 21.
