I have several news items to report to the community this week.
I was sorry to hear that Reta Freeman passed away last week. I’m sure many of you remember when she had a dress shop in Miller Grove
in the 1980s. She was buried in Old Saltillo Cemetery Friday, Jan. 25. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Freeman, in 2011. Rita was a sister to the late Harold Irby of our community.
Friday night, Miller Grove School honored the 1983 basketball teams. Each team (boys and girls) went to the third game of the regional playoffs, coming home with the title of area champs. After Friday night’s regular scheduled basketball game with Campbell, each of the 1983 team members were recognized and called onto the court. Alumni team members present were Sherry Ragan Dial, Shelly Ragan Crow, Cathy Weatherly, Brad Anderson, Jeff Seiber, Monty Tipps, Clint George, Teddy Jennings, Doug Hall and Brian Lennon. Each team member, as well as Coach Don Hobson, received a medallion in recognition of their achievement 30 years ago. As an added treat, the three cheerleaders from 1983 also reunited with the team (Sheila Dougan Renshaw, Lori Combs Northcutt and Amie Malone Strawn). I think everyone enjoyed the night of reminiscing old times and being reunited with their peers.
Speaking of ball games, homecoming will be this coming Friday (Feb. 1). I hope you make plans to attend. Basketball games will begin with the junior varsity boys playing Fruitvale at 5 p.m. It will also be the girls basketball team’s senior night. The seniors will be recognized before the start of the girls game. Basketball beau and sweetheart awards will be given between the girls and varsity boys game. Homecoming court and the crowning of the homecoming king and queen will be after the conclusion of the varsity boys basketball game.
This year’s homecoming court consists of Patrick Covington (junior), Ryan Dougan (senior), Nathan George (junior), Connor Hall (junior) and Caleb Schones (senior) as the nominees for Homecoming King. Homecoming Queen nominees are Ashley Claxton (junior), Alzbeta Kudelcova (senior), Katelyn McCreight (senior), Shelbi Potts (junior) and Kelsey Steele (senior). The 20112012 homecoming king and queen (Colten Baylus and Holly Miller) will also be on hand to hand over the crown and sash to the new homecoming royalty.
Kayla (Petty) Berkvens and daughter, Reagan, are here visiting family for a few weeks. Many MG residents will know her parents, Varrell Petty and Kay (Miller) Blanton. She hasn’t made a trip back to Texas since little Reagan Jade Berkvens was born on Oct. 20, in Spokane, Wash.
The Miller Grove Cemetery trustees had a meeting on Saturday to make plans for the cemetery’s memorial day services this coming May. It seems like a long time away, but it will be here before we know it.
Happy birthday this week to Lori (Combs) Northcutt and Ryan Mynatt on Jan. 27, Dalton Darrow on Jan. 30, John Mooney on Jan. 31 and Kaden Mabe on Feb. 2.
