I have only a few items to report about “The Grove” in this week’s news column.
Last week, I received a phone call from Della (Wheat) Loane. We had a nice visit. It was good to talk to her since I haven’t seen her since the Miller Grove Cemetery’s Memorial Day back in May.
Clay and Dichele Smith welcomed a new baby into the world last week. Little Cooper Kent Smith was born at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 29. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 20 inches long. Cooper was welcomed into the world by a big brother, Canyon Smith, and sister, Charleigh Smith, as well as a host of other family and friends. Cooper’s grandparents (with a Miller Grove connection) are Barry and Julie Smith, and great-grandparents are Kenneth and Mary Smith.
Saturday, Colten Baylus, Matthew Gifford, Nathan Petty and I went to the Union Grove basketball tournament to see our boys play. Unfortunately, we lost to Union Grove by only three points. We were playing for third place rights and did pretty well until the fourth quarter when the Eagles edged a few points on our boys, and we could never overtake them after that point.
After church Sunday, Faye Tipps and I made a trip to Cedar Creek Lake to see our cousin, J.W. Melton.
Happy birthday this week to Darrell May on Dec. 2; Kip Knowles, Lynn Wilemon and Wyatt Ridings on Dec. 4; and Jeremy Darrow, James Oler, Justin Shackelford and Tyler Lennon on Dec. 5.
This Thursday starts the big Miller Grove basketball tournament. Our varsity boys will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the new gym. The tournament is scheduled to run through Saturday, Dec. 8.
Sunday, Dec. 9 will be a fundraiser dinner for the Miller Grove FFA Chapter in the school's cafeteria. The dinner will consist of chicken and dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and a dessert. The meal will be served at noon. Any donations are welcome at admittance.
