Miller Grove News for May 23, 2012

The end of the school year is about the biggest news that we have in the community this week. Sometimes I feel like the only things happening in the community concern the school. But I guess it is the hub of the community. Without the school, we would be no different than County Line or Bonanza or any of the other small communities that have virtually vanished over time in our county.

Friday will be the traditional End-of-School Stew. The stew goes back more than 70 years in the community. I hope to see lots of community members and parents there this year. We had a pretty large group of folks last year, and I’m hoping there will be more this year. Out of two wash pots of stew that were made last year, we only had 13 quarts left over, so this year we will be making two pots of chicken stew and one of beef. Stew will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The junior high and high school students will be having a field day and an academic awards assembly Friday morning. After lunch will be the second annual seniors vs. faculty softball game. It was a lot of fun to watch last year and I’m sure it will be again this year. A big THANK YOU goes out to Farmers Electric Cooperative for sponsoring the shirts for the players to wear again this year.

Friday’s activities continue at 6 p.m. with the alumni basketball games in the new gym. Admission will be by donation only. Any proceeds from the stew and alumni games will go to the Alumni Association to give out scholarships at graduation.

Speaking of scholarships, the Alumni Association will be giving out their first scholarship at high school graduation next week. If you are not a member of the association and would like to be, there will be sign-up forms at the basketball games Friday night. Annual dues are $25 per person or $40 for an alumni and spouse.

Sunday night will be the baccalaureate services for the graduates at Miller Grove United Methodist Church. Bro. Ronald Davis will deliver the message and Mrs. Leanne Bryant will perform the special music. Last year Bro. Davis was the pastor who conducted the baccalaureate services, and he did a very good job. He is the high school math and history teacher as well as Miller Grove Baptist Church’s new pastor.

Happy birthday this week to Mary (Brand) Strickland on May 20, Mrs. Kim Irby and Brianne (Bailey) Fowles on May 22, Frank Burns and Leslie Wagley on May 23, and Bertha Sparks on May 25.

Michelle and Kevin Tipps were married six years on May 20. The 29th wedding anniversary of Barry and Julie Smith was on May 21. The 21st was also Scott and Christy Wren’s 17th anniversary. David and Tammie (Garrett) Winstead’s 27th anniversary will be on May 25. May 26 will be Derick and Karyn Petty’s fifth anniversary. Congratulations to all of these couples!

As you travel the highways and byways, don’t forget that all roads lead home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My e-mail address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
