Now that things have settled down from our first week back at school, I have had a little more time to dig up some news to report.

Monday I had a nice visit with Bill and Emma Johnson. It was nice to get to meet them. I have always heard about Bill Sr. and Mrs. Annie Johnson, and those were Bill’s parents. While we were talking, we reminisced over several different things. He told me that he remembered when my grandfather, Wade Darrow, was snake-bit while working in the Miller Grove School cafeteria in the 1940s. At that time, it was located in the gym, and they had to store food under the bleachers. My grandfather went down under the bleachers to get some of the food and was bitten by a copperhead snake. Bill said he remembered it like it was yesterday.

D.A.R.E. and PTO pizza night will be Thursday, Sept. 1. The D.A.R.E. officer will come to speak to the parents of the fifth graders at 6 p.m., and then PTO will be having a pizza night at 6:30 in the cafeteria. The pizza is going to be provided by Miller Grove PTO. Parents are encouraged to attend the PTO meeting, where officers will be elected, the fall carnival will be discussed and people will have the opportunity to join the Parent Teacher Organization.

Junior high baseball games have started. The next scheduled home games will be Sept. 1 and Sept. 8. Each game begins at 4:30 p.m.

Volleyball is also in full swing. We have a home game on Sept. 2 against Canton which will be played at 5 p.m.

Happy birthday to my aunts Mary Smith and Margaret Ragan on Sept. 1, Donald Sparks on Sept. 3 and Betty McGowan on Sept. 2.

Happy 103rd birthday to Maymie Burns on Aug. 30! Exceeding the century mark deserves a very special wish! Maymie is the mother of H.C. Burns.

Happy 22nd anniversary to my aunt and uncle, Kathy and Ronny Darrow, on Aug. 30. Patsy and Leon Hallman will have an anniversary to celebrate on Aug. 31. This year marks their 31st anniversary.

As you travel the highways and byways, don’t forget that all roads lead home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My e-mail address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
