The rains this week have been welcome. It was starting to get a little dry in our area.

Last Thursday night’s FFA banquet went off without a hitch. The students did a great job, and there was a large turnout by the parents and community. Chapter President Jena Burns welcomed everyone after the hearty barbecue meal catered by Murray’s BBQ of Cooper. Various awards were handed out throughout the evening and several school faculty and staff were recognized. Award recipients were Tatom Sink, Aaron Smith, Chase Lee, Mackenzie Taylor, Nicole Hall, Cayle Watson, Kaitlynn George, Brooke Bailey, Elizabeth Williams, Nancy DelCastillo, Bianca Resendiz, Mason Kerby, James Stasny, Cody Daniels, Haley Potts, Kasey Burns, Mareyna Pillard and Jena Burns. Northeast Texas Farmer’s Co-op and Cumby Telephone were two businesses that were honored for the support they have given the organization this year.

The out-going senior chapter officers introduced their parents to the audience and thanked them for all that they have done for them throughout their lives and high school careers. For high school seniors Jena Burns, Cayle Watson, Haley Potts, Mareyna Pillard, Kaitlynn George and Kasey Burns, this will be their final FFA banquet. As they exited the scene, the newly elected officers took their places on stage. 2011-2012 FFA officers will be Brandie McLane, Caleb Schones, Shelbi Potts, Nathan George, Mackenzie Taylor, Ryan Dougan, Holly Miller, Connor Hall, Katelynn McCreight and Nicole Hall.

Before the end of the ceremony, advisers Mr. Watson and Ms. Potts were honored by the students for their tremendous amount of time and effort that has gone into making Miller Grove’s FFA Chapter a huge success for yet another year.

Even though the FFA organization may seem inferior to other organizations or extracurricular activities at school, you can bet that the students are always hard at work. Their time to shine comes only a few times a year, but when Miller Grove students put their minds to it, they can succeed at anything they do. A few examples:

  • The North East Texas Junior Market Show (where Miller Grove students took a large portion of the livestock sales).
  • Raising money at the annual stew and auction.
  • Congratulating their fellow students on this year’s accomplishments at the chapter’s banquet.

The FFA program is such an asset to our small community, teaching students life lessons as well as to live the FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” Well done for another year MG students, well done.

My little niece, Savanna, had her second birthday party Saturday with several of her friends. They all had a big time playing, eating cake and opening presents.

I had a nice Easter this Sunday. I went to church with my grandmother, and then we had Easter dinner at our house.

Happy birthday to Savanna Darrow and Derick Petty on April 25, Mary Lou Akins on April 26, Fred Moseley on April 28, and Dwayne Wren and Natalie (Darrow) Stuckey on April 29.

Happy 12th anniversary to Trudy and Harold Mayers on April 29.

Remember these upcoming events in the community:

  • The Miller Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s annual car show on April 30.
  • The Miller Grove Cemetery’s Memorial Day service on May 7.
  • The Miller Grove End-of-School Stew on May 20.
