Since the excitement and hustle-and-bustle of Christmas is over, I don’t have too much news to report this week. This is the last community news column of the year and I thought I would dig back in my historical files and pull out a Miller Grove News column from over 100 years ago. I figured it might be nice to let the readers know what was going on in “The Grove” on Jan. 1, 1906.
This clipping was written by someone who wrote under the secret name of “Fourteen” and the column was published in the Sulphur Springs Gazette. See if you can recognize any of the names or people mentioned:
“Jan. 1-Another year has gone with its joys and sorrows, a large portion of each has fallen to our lot.
“The holidays being over visiting has about subsided.
“Those who have been visiting are: Dr. and Mrs. Hall, of Lindale, spent Christmas with the former’s father, I.W. Hall. Mrs. Emma Parker, of Denison, spent Christmas with her brother, J.W. Delay, of this place. Mrs. Parker returned home the 30th of Dec. accompanied by her mother-in-law, who has been out here for some time. Also Mrs. J.W. Delay who is going to visit her parents at Aubrey, Denton county Texas. A.L. Taylor and son, J.W. Taylor of McKinzie, Tenn., took advantage of the 21 days excursion and came to Texas, to visit relatives. J.W. Taylor will spend the whole twenty-one days with his Uncle, P.H. Oliver and family, but his father only spent a few days here, then accompanied by his brother-in-law, P.H. Oliver, he visited his niece Mrs. Edith Stuart at Lindale, after which Mr. Oliver returned him, and Mr. Taylor visited friends at Celeste, then returned home. Dr. and Mrs. Roach and Prof. Patillo and wife, of Lone Oak, spent Christmas with the ladies parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Renshaw, also-Virgil Renshaw, of Lone Oak, spent the later part of last week here. Prof. W.J. Graves and wife, of Cumby, were with us a few days the past week.
“Burl Smith and wife, and Misses Bessie Corbett and Tillie Bagwell spent several days in Cumby last week.
“Laura Bishop who is attending school at Commerce, visited friends at this place during the holidays.
“Miss Tillie Johnson accompanied by Prof. Turbyfill, visited relatives in Ruff last week.
“Prof’s Tucker and Randall, of Sherley and Greenview spend the holidays here.
“Miss Minnie Renshaw spent a portion of last week here.”
There are still a few birthdays to celebrate before we ring in the new year. Happy birthday to my Uncle Ronny Darrow, Barbara Potts, Geneva Bayse and Belle Renshaw all on Dec. 28. And, Coy Johnson and Chris McGowan’s birthday was on Dec. 30.
