Once again the sound of laughter and children’s voices fill the hallways of Miller Grove school, as it has done for the last 150 years. This year marks an pivotal turning point in our small community’s vast history. It isn’t every day that you see an entity celebrate even one hundred years of operation. Many schools across the county have consolidated or shut their doors for one final time because of low enrollment or various other obstacles. For instance, at one time there were about 8 schools in what is now the Miller Grove School District. Slowly, each of those rural schools consolidated with Miller Grove to form the school we have today.
The Miller Grove Volunteer Fire Department has announced that they have a new website. To visit the site, please go to www.mgfdtexas.com to see all of the changes they have made. The VFD also participated in the “Hot August Night” event at the Hopkins County Civic Center Saturday night. Volunteer fire departments from all across the county cooked food and several entertainers preformed for the audience. To my surprise, there was quite a turn-out. I figured that there would be several people there, but I was shocked when I drove up to see the entire grounds of the civic center covered with people. Rick Trevino was scheduled to be the last entertainer on stage. I had to leave before his performance.
The Texas Historical Commission has recently approved all of the text for the cemetery’s historical marker. Maybe we will get the marker some time before Christmas.
The Romans family will be having their annual reunion at the Miller Grove Community Center on Sept. 19.
Gail Garmon was recently featured in the “Kitchen Scents” section of the Rains County Leader. It was a very nice article and it contained a couple of Gail’s recipes and her picture. Everyone knows what a good cook she is.
