Now that we have broken the 100-degree temperature mark, I’m sure we will have several more days of hot summer to go. At this time in the year I always look forward to knowing that fall is around the corner.
This week’s happy birthday wishes go out to Ken Haywood on July 19 and Sue Ann Sparks on July 22.
My Aunt Betty and Uncle Mack Phillips celebrated their 51st anniversary on the July 18!
Friday, I found out that Leroy Akins had passed away in the early morning hours. I always enjoyed visiting with Leroy. He had more old stories than just about anybody and was always a barrel of laughs. Leroy was the fifth child born to Albert Braxton “Bert” Akins and Mattie Mae (Burns) Akins on Sept. 25, 1923. He married Jean Long, who preceded him in death in February of this year. Leroy is survived by his daughter (Martha), son (Braxton), grandchildren, sister (Mildred Wheat), and brother (H.C. Akins). Leroy is an individual who will be missed by all who knew him. He will be buried Friday, July 23, in Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas.
I was talking with Jim Burns the other day, and he told me that he had recently attended the 150th anniversary of the Masonic Lodge in Sulphur Bluff. The Lodge held another meeting on July 8, at which time Jim was presented with a 60th anniversary pin by two men from the Grand Lodge. It is a rare occasion that a Mason is a member of the organization for 60 years. Congratulations Jim on this grand accomplishment!
Classmates Chance Lee and Seth Roberts graduated from Miller Grove High School in May and are moving to Tyler to enroll in Tyler Junior College. Good luck to them on this new adventure in their life.
