My deepest sympathies go out to the family of Ronnie Renshaw. Ronnie passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, in Quitman.
The heat of August is grinding on me by now. I am so ready for some cooler weather. It’s so hot you can’t do much outside unless it is very early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Everything in our part of Hopkins County is burnt to a crisp. We received a little shower last week, but that didn’t go too far. In fact, the little storm that blew through did some damage to a few homes and trees in Miller Grove.
Mrs. Kim Irby and I went to Sidekick’s Restaurant Friday and saw my cousins, Ernest and Margaret Cain, while we were there. It was good to get to visit with them for a few minutes.
I was sorry to hear about Gladis Buns passing away. Gladis Marie Burns was born Apr. 1, 1923, in Hopkins County. She married Frank Moody Burns on July 28, 1967, in Cumby. She was the daughter of E.M. and Gerrie (Coke) Harrison. Funeral services were held at West Oaks Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11. Visitation was held one hour prior to the beginning of the services. Burial followed in Restlawn Memorial Park in Sulphur Springs. Gladis was survived by her husband, Frank, two daughters and one daughter-in-law. She was preceded in death by step-son Larry Burns in 2008.
I received an e-mail from Jill Murry the other day. She asked me to pass along a message from her and her husband, Judd. They are from Cooper, Texas, and have been leasing the indoor roping arena in Miller Grove since March 2011. Jill said, “We are no longer going to be leasing the arena, but wanted to extend a sincere thanks to the Miller Grove community for allowing us to be a part of it. We want to thank Mac Garrett, the Miller Grove Water Supply and the Miller Grove Volunteer Fire Department for the accommodations and help with water for the arena. We would also like to thank Miller Grove Farm Supply, as they usually had what we needed for a last minute breakdown! Fred Hunter, Dottie and Sandra, for taking care of the concession stand and always having something good to eat. Finally, we would like to thank Rodney and Susan Lennon for giving us the opportunity of leasing the arena and to be able to show the rest of the world where Miller Grove, Texas, is located!”
Happy birthday this week to Claudia (McCutchen) Jones and Johnny Duckworth on Aug. 13, Jerry McGowan and Fonda (Hoover) Hurley on Aug. 14, and Codey Hunt and D.J. Spencer on Aug. 15.
Aug. 14 will mark Jim and Mary Burns’ 64th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to them! I would also like to send out a happy anniversary wish to Virgil and Jean (Ivie) McEnturff on Aug. 15. This will be their 54th anniversary.
Did anyone get a chance to read about the Tele-Grammy awards that the News-Telegram conducted? These are fan-based awards that showcase the “best” Hopkins County businesses and individuals. This year the 6th annual Tele-Grammy’s were published in the July 28-29 edition of the News-Telegram, and Stacey’s Fish Fry was voted “Best Seafood” in Hopkins County. I thought that was a great honor for one of our only businesses in Miller Grove. Congratulations, Stacey!
