MILLER GROVE News May 15, 2013

The Miller Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s big shiny fire engine started sounding its horn, students were lined up with welcome home posters in front of the gym and camera flashes were going off everywhere. No, it wasn’t a celebrity in Miller Grove or the scene of some new movie. It was definitely a first for the community though. It’s the biggest news around The Grove this week — Nathan George won first place in the one-mile race at the state track meet this Friday in Austin.

A big congratulations to Nathan! He has worked hard and deserves this special honor. To Nathan’s surprise, when he and the other boys returned from Austin Saturday afternoon they had a welcome home part awaiting their arrival. Several of the students, board members and parents were waiting at the school to welcome the guys home from their recent journey.

This is the first time that anyone has won a competition at the state level for our school. It’s pretty exciting and everyone is very proud of Nate’s accomplishment.

As the story goes, Nathan didn’t get to compete until nearly 11 p.m. on Friday because a huge storm slammed Austin and the stadium where the track meet was being held had to be evacuated. But, even after the delay and chaos, Nathan still prevailed and brought home the gold! The other students who participated at the state meet were Titus Lehman (senior), Quinten Stovall (senior), Logan Miller (sophomore), Trey Lester (freshman) and Riley Mitchell (freshman). Congratulations to each of these young men.

I hope all of the mothers out there had a nice Mother’s Day on Sunday. Our family just had a meal together, but that was enough for my mother and my sister-in-law. I think they enjoyed it for the fact that they didn’t have to cook the meal.

Happy birthday this week to Laryn Sawyer on May 12, Vicki (Mabe) Lee and Tommie Jean Lennon on May 14, Jesse Weaver on May 15, my sweet aunt, Betty (Darrow) Phillips, on May 16, and Jacque (Hayes) Sparks and Jim Mack Taylor on May 18.

Happy 25th wedding anniversary to Darren and Sheila (Dougan) Renshaw on May 14.

Mark your calendars for the End of School Stew that will be Friday, May 31. I will have more details in next week’s column.

I had a very good birthday last week. I received many cards, Facebook messages, and birthday wishes from students, friends, and family. The fourth grade students all made birthday cards for me and Mrs. Parrish (the fourth grade teacher) made me a huge card with

Although this is a Miller Grove news column, I can’t help but mention the death of one of Country Music’s greatest pioneers, George Jones. Whether you like country music or not, I think everyone would have to admit that George influenced many, many people across the span of his 50-plus years of churning out

Is it summer or winter? That’s the question I keep asking myself. I’m getting a little confused. It seems like each time we get some nice weather and we just start thinking that warm weather is here to stay, we get another blast from a cool front. I’m sure this is wreaking havoc with people’s gardens. I know Jim Potts told me that they had to re-plant their tomatoes already. Hopefully spring is here to stay; heck, it’s almost May.

This week I have seen such a difference in the trees in our area. It almost seems as if they all sprouted leaves overnight. It is so nice to see everything greening up. Hopefully, the rains will continue to come throughout the summer and it won’t be as dry this year.
