Once again this week I have to report a death of someone with ties to our community. Veda Rhea (Lennon) Terry passed away at her home in Emory on Sunday, Jun. 26. On May 10, 1914, she was the second child born to Lawrence Sullivan Lennon and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lennon Lee, in Hopkins County. She was two years younger than her brother, Loyd Lennon. Veda Rhea married Cornell Savage “Tooter” Terry in the County Line community on Aug. 19, 1939. I don’t know if it is true, but I was told that Veda Rhea and Tooter found Bro. Bloodswoth (a local preacher) in the cotton patch and asked him if he would marry them. He then put his tow-sack full of cotton down and married them right there in that cotton patch, and they spent their honeymoon in the big city of Sulphur Springs. Veda Rhea was preceded in death by her husband (in 2003), parents, brother, and two sons (Tommy Frank Terry in 1956 and Lawrence Arthur Terry in 2009). She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Terry, two granddaughters, and three nephews (Johnny Lennon, Rex Lennon and Dale Terry).
Happy birthday to Charles Millsap and Scott McGowan on June 26 and Chrysteen (Mabe) Watts on June 29. H.C. Akins will celebrate his 90th birthday on Thursday, June 30. Congratulations, H.C.!
Happy anniversary to Ernest and Margaret (Darrow) Cain on June 29. They have been married 55 years! Also, congratulations to Leasa and Darin Petty and Junior and Sally Millsap, who both share June 30 as their anniversary.
I hope everyone has a great Fourth of July holiday next week. Be safe and be cautious when dealing with fireworks and of course, don’t drink and drive.
