Nobody can pinpoint where I actually was invented, but it can be assumed I've been around as long as snow, in some shape, form or fashion.
One of my earliest commercial appearances came at the 1919 State Fair in Dallas, where Samuel Bert sold me to hot customers needing a tasty treat. I've been a favorite in New Orleans for years, where I started out being sold from push-carts in the city, much like my early predecessor, "Italian Ice." In 1934, inventor Ernest Hansen patented the first known machine that actually produced me in mass quantities and I became a nationwide sensation thereafter. I come in almost an imaginable flavor, but you better hurry — if it's hot outside, I won't be around long.
Who Am I?
