Four Stars for "Four Christmases"

"Four Christmases may not be a holiday staple like "It's a Wonderful Life" or "A Christmas Story," but the film has the right mix of yuletide warmth and family dysfunction to make it amusing.

Starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn as a co-habitating couple named Kate and Brad who would rather take a beach vacation than share Christmas with their families, "Four Christmases" doesn't preach to you nor does it rely on crass jokes and slapstick to get its laughs

The jist of the movie is that both of the couple's parents are divorced, so they must go to four Christmas celebrations in one day. That includes the back-breaking reunion with Brad's Mixed Martial Arts brothers and to a meal with his mother who is dating Brad's best friend, from Kate's mother's house dominated by single female family members to her father who is making up for his past indiscretions.

While the movie makes fun of the families, it also pokes a stick at Brad and Kate's yuppy lifestyle which is too much style and not enough substance. The point is proven many times over.

The supporting cast is superb with Robert Duvall, Jon Favreau, Mary Steenburgen, Jon Voight, Sissy Spacek and the spunky Kristin Chenoweth. Watch out for appearances by Dwight Yoakam and Tim McGraw.
