New Moon: The flaws of a reluctant vampire

Vampirism has been an odd human obsession since even before 18th century Serbian folklore gave it a name. The unique fascination and fear of an evil, reanimated corpse with a hunger for human blood has permeated all cultures for centuries. But a more recent development entrancing people again is the reluctant vampire: the man cursed with a taste for human blood who must endure an eternity of torture in an attempt to curb his evil condition. He is known today, most famously, as Edward Cullen and can be seen in theatres now in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon."

'Astro Boy' new family fave

My son, space cookie that he is (he has more stats and information floating around in his head about the planets, stars and space than most people even know exists), has been looking forward to the movie “Astro Boy.”

‘Julie & Julia’ – Romantic comedy cooked up for both genders

“Julie & Julia” is a film about following dreams, self-transformation, and the importance of love. Frankly, I hate films where this theme is so explicit. They're usually bland. But something about "Julie & Julia" keeps it spicy and delicious –  and it's not just all the butter.

For a lift, take your kid to see UP in 3-D

While putting off going to the grocery store (one of my least favorite things to do because let’s face it, it’s depressing to go in with a list then based on how flat your pocketbook already was to begin with spend what little you had left with considerably less than what was on the list!) with my 10-year-old in tow, I remembered seeing the listing for “Up” in the paper the other day. I knew I had to go to the store for necessities that couldn’t wait until the next day but really dragging my feet on my day off.

‘Terminator Salvation’: Edge-of-your-seat action with an existential twist

Yes,“Terminator Salvation” is a high-adrenaline action-adventure film with robots, car chases and — of course — gargantuan explosions. But at the core of this sci-fi flick is a surprising hope for the resilience of what makes us human: our souls. Yet “Terminator Salvation” is also a visceral tale of humanity.

Rotten Tomatoes: DVDs
  • 39% 2012
Roland Emmerich's 2012 provides plenty of visual thrills, but lacks a strong enough script to support its massive scope and inflated length.
  • 25% Law Abiding Citizen
Unnecessarily violent and unflinchingly absurd, Law Abiding Citizen is plagued by subpar acting and a story that defies reason.
  • 81% Broken Embraces
Pedro Almodovar's fourth film with Penélope Cruz isn't his finest work, but he brings his signature visual brilliance to this noirish tale, and the cast turns in some first-class performances.

  • Hot Tub Time Machine
HOT TUB TIME MACHINE follows a group of best friends who’ve become bored with their adult lives: Adam (John Cusack) has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Rob Corddry) is a party guy who can’t find the party; Nick’s (Craig Robinson) wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob (Clark Duke) won’t leave his basement.
  • 100% How to Train Your Dragon
From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How to Train Your Dragon.” Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.
