Peavine Pinion Pool will be the place to be Feb. 6 if you’re a kid. Next Saturday will be the annual Larry Buster Memorial Sulphur Springs Kids’ Trout Fishing Day.
The rules remain basically the same as in past years, but those planning to attend will want to take note of one change — the time the event is being held.
Kids of all ages are encouraged to bring their rods, reels and bait to take a chance at catching some of the 2,079 rainbow trout stocked in Peavine Pinion Pool by TPWD personnel. While there is no minimum size limit on rainbow trout, a daily bag limit of 5 fish per person is being imposed.
In the past, the event has continued until noon. This year, Kids’ Trout Fishing Day will begin at noon and continue until 3 p.m. in the pond behind Hopkins County Regional Civic Center and Sulphur Springs High School in Buford Park.
As is customary, Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries Division is hosting the fishing day with help from the city of Sulphur Springs, civic organizations, local merchants and individual contributors. For instance, Kiwanis Club of Sulphur Springs will be providing hot dogs to for young anglers who work up an appetite checking and rebaiting their hooks. Soft drinks will also be provided to prevent them from becoming too parched while guarding their lines. Items have also been provided so that door prizes can be drawn and awarded to participating youngsters.
Because the event is sponsored by TPWD, adults who are actively helping kids fish for trout are exempt from normal license requirements during the event (12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6). All other anglers will be required to have a freshwater fishing license per normal licensing regulations.
Kirk Pratas with TPWD Inland Fisheries District 3B recommends using whole kernel corn, Berkley power eggs and trout bait, and small spinners to bait their hooks as these items are known to be general favorites of the trout.
