Dr. Jeffry Huffman makes presentation to board of directors
Dr. Huffman, urologist on staff at Memorial Hospital, recently returned from serving in Iraq. He provided medical care to the injured in Iraq. Dr. Huffman had a flag flown over the hospital specifically for Memorial Hospital. He presented this flag to the Board of Directors.
During his presentation he showed the surgery tents at Balad, Iraq. When the soldiers are brought from the field through “Heaven’s Highway,” a tent with a huge American flag is on the ceiling so as the gurneys pass under the flag the injured soldier knows he is safe.
Also, the numbers saved from battlefield injuries is in the 90 percent range; mostly amputations and head injuries.
Dr. Huffman also showed photos of the area of the hospital from an airplane and the film continued with shots of what the doctors do to help the Iraqis, our soldiers, and in some cases, Al Qaida.
The board of directors and administration thank Dr. Huffman for having a flag flown over the hospital in Iraq. This is quite rare and is a very symbolic gesture.
The Volunteer Auxiliary met in May and awarded three scholarships to hospital employees. Total scholarships awarded for these individuals were $1,905. The volunteers also approved to spend $19,219.68 on requests including new furniture for the ICU waiting room, new furniture for the day surgery department, and a gift for hospital staff for 60 year anniversary.
Volunteers honored for hours of service were Betty Tucker for 500 hours and Ginnie Dischavio for 2500 hours.
