She and her husband, Dan, are the owners of Advantage Copy Systems, located at 1321 Shannon Road and an authorized Canon dealer.
The Brown family bought Advantage Copy Systems from Greg and Kris Walker on April 1, 2006, when the Walkers moved to the Tyler area to open East Texas Copy Systems in Tyler, Longview, Lufkin and Palestine.
Paula Brown, who retired after teaching home economics for 30 years in public schools (20 for Sulphur Springs Independent School District), oversees the daily operations of Advantage Copy Systems, focusing on sales, lease, rent and repair of Canon office equipment, while her husband, Dan, lends a hand outside of his vice president of operations position at Resistol/Stetson Hat Company in Garland.
The Browns’ two sons, graduates of Sulphur Springs High School, and daughter-in-law have also contributed to ACS at various times over the years.
“Although they are not on the monthly payroll for the company, each of them have contributed to our success and are always willing to use their expertise when we need it,” Paula said.
Their oldest son, Matt, is the vice president of Guaranty Bond Bank, and his wife, Shannon, is an accountant for Robert J. Russell, CPA. Zane Brown, the youngest son, is a pet food specialist for Loyall Cargill Animal Nutrition.
At Advantage Copy Systems the Brown family has “a top-notch group of service technicians” on staff —Tim Sink, Brandon Brock and Jeremiah Bye, coordinated by service manager Larry Barney — to go with their “top quality” Canon machines.
“I have great employees who love what they do and have been with the business for many years,” said Brown, noting that some average 11 years with the company. “I’d put ACS technicians up against any others in the field and feel confident in their abilities.” ACS makes it their business to know their customers and business owners by name.
“Our customers are not faceless,” Brown said.
One name – other than Brown – is associated with ACS.
“If you want to talk about buying, leasing or renting a machine, ‘just call Johnny,’” Brown said with a smile referring to her two salesmen, Johnny Wetzel and Johnny Ross. “Wetzel has the territory to the east, and Ross has the territory to the west.”
Working behind the scenes at ACS is go-to guy Tony Maffia.
“Tony can fix or find just about anything when it comes copiers,” Brown said.
Brown continued,“As a small business owner, I consider myself very fortunate to have an office staff that most only dream about having.”
Other members of the ACS family include administrative assistant Lisa Seale and Renee Armstrong handling service contracts.
Part-time employee Glenda Watkins a.k.a. “The Rock,” has been with ACS since the former owners, the Walkers, opened it.
“She knows just about everything there is to know about the business,” Brown said of her tried and true staffer.
It is this family that keeps the ACS customers up and running. Advantage Copy Systems takes pride in doing whatever it takes to help customers get through a regular day, especially with copying and printing playing such a big role in today’s business. All concerns are given the same attention, whether it be something as minor as a replacement ink cartridge or of larger magnitude such as supplying a replacement machine until repairs can be made.
“This company was built on service, and we make taking care of our customers our number one focus,” Brown said. “When one of our customers has a problem with a machine or needs assistance, they call us, and our goal is to be there in less than eight business hours.”
Need more proof? The walls at ACS are lined with recognition awards by Canon, engraved with Advantage Copy Systems staff names from the Association of Technical Service Professionals (ATSP).
