Is Jimmy Buffett planning a visit to Hopkins County?

E-mail Print PDF

Last year, the King of Margaritaville gave our fair city a shout-out during the Dallas show.

“He changed the lyrics to ‘Coconut Telegraph,’” said News-Telegram Arts Editor Terry Mathews. “He sang, ‘I want to hear it on the Coconut Telegraph from Texas Stadium to Sulphur Springs.’ I was in the photography pit at the time, so I had to go back and listen to a replay to make sure he actually said ‘Sulphur Springs.’ And sure enough, he did.”
This year, he’s going one step further in an effort to reach out to  his Northeast Texas fans.
Rumor has it that during his mini-Texas tour next month, Buffett’s planning a stop in Hopkins County. Details about the visit remain sketchy, however.
“My guess is he heard about our world-famous mirrored restrooms on the square,” Mathews noted. “Maybe he’s coming to get an up-close look at them.”
No specific date was given, but Mathews figures the Big Kahuna will roll through dairy country sometime between May 2 when he and the Coral Reefer Band play the Tower amphitheater in Austin –  and May 4, when they’ll be in concert at the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco.
“We are excited to welcome Jimmy Buffett to Sulphur Springs,” the city’s community development director said. “Maybe we can convince him to sing a few songs while he’s here.”
Longtime parrotheads Benny and Sue Ann Johnson are issuing a call to fellow fans.
“Get out your Hawaiian shirts and your flip flops,” the Johnsons said. “We’ll gather on the square in our full regalia and circle the restrooms when he sings ‘Fins.’”

Jimmy Buffett in dairy country?
Regarding our story on Page 10 about a possible visit from Jimmy Buffett, we hope you enjoyed reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it. While we can dream that the world’s richest beach bum would drop by, right now, the visit remains an April Fools’ fantasy. Thanks to Shane Shepard and the Johnsons for their cooperation in the mishcief-making.
