On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the duo will be featured at open mic night at Dallas’ House of Blues.
“After much encouragement from News-Telegram Arts Editor Terry Mathews, Hannah sent a video of her and Ryan McKenzie doing their renditions of John Prine’s ‘Angel From Montgomery’ and Steve Winwood’s ‘Can’t Find My Home’ through YouTube to the House of Blues to introduce herself,” said Hannah’s mother, Nancy. “Their booking agent posted on YouTube that she would like to sign them up for open mic night in January.”
The two have become a popular act, performing in local coffee houses, restaurants and listening rooms. Kirby, a music major at Texas A&M–Commerce, sings and plays the violin. McKenzie has been playing the guitar and singing since he was in high school. According to Nancy, the HoB booking agent says “99 percent” of the acts booked for open mic end up being booked for other gigs at the popular venue.
“I’m excited to be playing in such a cool place,” Hannah said. “Hopefully, open mic night will just be the beginning there!”
Nancy says the caravan will leave at 4:30 p.m. and “everyone should be able to dine, enjoy awesome music and leave Dallas around 8 p.m.”
Hannah and Ryan will perform four or five numbers on the Restaurant Stage, beginning at 7 p.m. The House of Blues, located at 2200 North Lamar St., features food by celebrity chef Aaron Sanchez. The atmosphere is family friendly. Their phone number is 214-978-2583.
