Clark, who has taught at TAMU-C for 22 years, began playing with the opera in 1991 on a part-time basis.
“I played in different capacities until 2000,” he explained. “That’s when I won the audition for the principal spot, so I’ve played everything since.”
Clark studied music at North Texas State University and Yale and says his favorite opera is Wagner’s “The Ring.”
Of the new Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, Clark says, “Everything that comes out of the pit or off of the stage at the Winspear is heard. Whether it’s good or bad, you’re going to hear it.”
Clark’s wife, Lou Ann, who is retiring from her position as the Sulphur Springs High School librarian, tries to attend every opera.
“I usually go for the Sunday matinee,” she said.
Though his wife is retiring, Clark has no plans to leave TDO.
“These jobs, once you get them, you want to keep forever,” he noted. “They’re so hard to get in the first place.”
