Tie a Blue Ribbon in honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month in April

The entire month of April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and the folks at Lake Country CASA would like for all businesses and residents to tie blue ribbons on their businesses, cars, lapels or wherever to remind everyone to fight for the protection of our children! The Blue Ribbon Child Abuse Prevention Campaign was started in spring 1989 by a grandmother who received the devastating news that her beloved grandson had died of injuries inflicted by his parents. As an expression of her grief and outrage, Bonnie Finney tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her van as a way to remember “the bruised and battered body of her grandson” and to alert her community to the tragedy of child abuse. Please show your support by “Tying a blue ribbon.”

Want to Make a Difference in a Young Person’s Life? Host an international student in your home

Volunteer families, with or without children, are needed to host international teens from more than 12 different countries for the 2010/2011 school year. They are in need of caring families to provide beds and meals, as well as friendship, understanding and a genuine desire to share the American way of life with a young person from overseas.

The students speak English, are covered by medical insurance and have spending money for their personal expenses! The students are between the ages of 15 and 18 and will attend the high school closest to their host family’s home. Families are able to review student applications and select the student they feel will best match their family. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Debbie Swingle at 903-316-9612 or visit flag-intl.org.

Tip of the Week:

“You can still save taxes on your 2009 tax return and save for your retirement at the same time. Taxpayers (or individuals) have until April 15, 2010 to buy (or fund) and Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for 2009. Taxpayers (or individuals) under the age of 50 can buy (or fund) an IRA up to $5000, those that are over the age of 50 can buy (or fund) and IRA for $6000. If you are married, you can double this amount for your spouse. Of course, the IRS has a few rules such as you must have earned income and if you make too much income, the IRA could be “phased” out (or not allowed). Nothing is as simple as the IRS makes it out to be!!! Call or email me and I will be glad to tell you if you qualify for an IRA.” — Keith Bland

NOTICE: The Chamber of Commerce office will be closed tomorrow, April 2, for Good Friday.

That’s all for now…have a GREAT week!
