Family Owned Business: East Texas Landscaping grew from the roots up in Maynard’s hands

Jerry Maynard, owner of East Texas Landscaping and Fencing, got a grass roots start – literally. His business grew from the simple task of mowing lawns.

However, the roots of his inspiration run deep with his grandfather, Rudolph, and his father, Gary, who work in the tree service business.

Maynard’s business has bloomed over the past 16 years, adding fencing, irrigation, landscape design and much more to his services.

“I really enjoy working outdoors and with people,” Maynard said.

From yellow marigolds and pink petunias to varigated privet and maple trees, bags of potting soil and pounds of flagstone, East Texas Landscaping has a vast selection.

“We are set up to handle just about any landscaping need with the exception for lighting,” Maynard said, looking over the blooming azaleas adorning his lot at the corner of Texas and Main streets in Sulphur Springs.

“We are professionals,” he said, referring to his two main employees – Ian Wells and David Sutton. “We have studied design and landscape. Both Ian and David hold degrees from Texas Tech.”

As operations manager Sutton takes care of the details of installation and maintenance of the business that includes commercial, residential and industrial while Sulphur Springs High School graduate Wells handles the sales and design aspects of East Texas Landscaping.

“They have been working for me for over 12 years,” Maynard said. “They are educated in computer design and really care about the job.”

Maynard’s right hand is business manager Linda Edwards. She oversees the office files and inventory, and coordinates the calls and schedules of the several other employees that assist on job sites.

East Texas Landscaping handles all sizes of projects from the small to large – giving a free on-site consultation and price quote to customers. Some of the natural landscaping they provide includes trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, sod, flagstone patios, retainer walls and water gardens.

Customers considering fencing may choose from a wide variety of ornamental, vinyl, wood grain, chainlink, cedar split rail and automatic gates with telephone entry systems. East Texas Landscaping customizes their designs, making fencing decisions easy for their customers.

They also provide dog kennel installation and stock Muenster Natural Dog Food, milled naturally since 1932.

With licensed irrigators on staff, East Texas Landscaping can provide irrigation needs of a small residential lot, or a multi-acre homesite or a commercial location, creating “the foundation of a beautiful lawn.”

East Texas Landscaping also provides services like mowing, weed-eating, edging, shrub trimming and soil analysis and guarantees what they install. They sell rocks by the pound and offer a discount when loaded by the full pallet. Rock lettering and etching is also available through East Texas Landscaping.

This isn’t just any ordinary yard service. Maynard prides himself on his all-organic nursery, fertilizers and merchandise.

“Organics is the natural and intelligent alternative to chemical treatment,” Maynard states. “The natural fertilizers are the safe and effective way to nourish your plant life, control pests and provide a healthy place for your children to play.”

East Texas Landscaping cares about local youths by supporting the Sulphur Springs Soccer Association and Sulphur Springs Baseball and Softball Associations.

They have also arranged for His Kids Learning Center students to experience nature by releasing ladybugs from their business to further promote their natural practices.

For Mother’s Day, East Texas Landscaping offers a special alternative to a vase of flowers with their combination pots of flowering plants.

Award recipient from the Better Business Bureau, East Texas Landscaping is a member in good standing of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce.
