Who Am I?

E-mail Print PDF

I come from Mexico, although I have become an American holiday tradition. The 14th Century Aztecs called me “Cuetlaxochitl” and I was used both to control fevers and to make dye. A U.S. ambassador to Mexico found me and took me to his home in South Carolina, before sharing me with his friends as gifts. This same man, who I would eventually be named after, later spearheaded the Smithsonian Institute.
