Who am I?

E-mail Print PDF

Today, I am a popular tourist destination and a European hotspot for nightlife, though many years ago I was more known for the volcano that essentially formed my modern makeup. I sit in the Aegean Sea, a collection of islands formerly known as Thera. I was given my current name by the Latin empire, in reference to Saint Irene. It's thought by some that the lost city of Atlantis sits off my shores, though it is only speculation. I boast no rivers and potable water was scarce up until the early 1990s. Today, most of my residents no longer have to collect rainwater. Tourism drives my economy and I can provide visitors with some of the most stunning photographic opportunities in the world.
