Originally published in September of 2008, "The Hunger Games," Suzanne Collins’ first book in a series of stories about an almost-unrecognizable America (now called Panem) centers around a 16-year-old, Katniss Everdeen, who the sole support of her mother and young sister, Primrose. The family survives the stark conditions only because Katniss’ late father taught her to hunt with a bow and arrow. Although hunting is illegal now, Katniss and her friend, Gale, forage enough to keep food on their tables.
