Luminant announces facility closures, job reductions.
Northeast Texas is receiving a major economic
blow with the announced closings of
Luminant mining operations at the Thermo
Mine as well as the Winfield Mine and the
reduction of generating facilities at the Monticello
Power Plant.

You can read the rest in todays paper.

What a blow to this area!
Guilt is concerned with the past. Worry is concerned about the future. Contentment enjoys the present.

I'm one of those losing my job.
I don't know how much Luminant pays in on local taxes, it's a lot and will be missed.
I've been there for a long time and will be in pretty good shape. Most of our employees are young guys with families, I feel sorry for them.
What is not being told is that it is up to Obama to pull this EPA regulation.

Nothing good is going to happen until this IDIOT is out of office and sent packing. VOTE 2012!

hey buck, i'm really sorry about the position you and your fellow co-workers are in.
in this economy, the loss of this many jobs in one area, particularly since the hopkins county area has so few jobs to begin with, is really hard on the whole community.
best of luck to you and the others that are now looking.

www.epa.gov/airtransport/basic.html
link is to an explanation of the epa rule buck mentioned. i was curious as to what the rule entailed.

www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/09/02/clean...onomy-record-success
what the white house claims as "successes" in regards to environmental issues. scroll down & it discusses the rule above.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Envi...al_Protection_Agency
above link is to a wiki article (take it for what it's worth...). in the article, it explains that the EPA is now an independent agency & is no longer a cabinet position (under Nixon, who founded this agencey, it was a cabinet position) and that the only link is the president appoints the leader with congressional approval. the epa must compy with the laws and budgets imposed by congress. it also has the ability to write it's own rules and regulations, as long as they do not conflict with existing federal laws. what's scary is this :
"Air quality standards review - Since its inception the EPA has begun to rely less and less on its scientists and more on non-science personnel. EPA has recently changed their policies regarding limits for ground-level ozone, particulates, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and lead. New policies will minimize scientist interaction with the agency and rely more on policy makers who have minimal scientific knowledge. This new policy has been criticized by Democrats.[18] On March 12, 2008, the federal government of the United States reported that the air in hundreds of U.S. counties was simply too dirty to breathe, ordering a multi-billion dollar expansion of efforts to clean up smog in cities and towns nationwide.[19]"

really? an agency that's about environmental science is utilizing "less and less" science and relying more and more on "non-science personnel".

It's all politics.
The EPA is now saying they tried to work with us to keep from shutting us down. The ruling came out in July, we never heard about them helping us. We have six months to put in scrubbers to meet the guidelines. It would take 4 or 5 years to put them in!

The ones I've talked to are defending him. It's the same old mantra - "it's all Bush's fault".
