:)

Just saw this Youtube video of the traffic around the square.

Now that's what I'm talking about....
I watched it 3 times and did not see one single accident.

(are there lights, or 4-way stop signs?)
Or are Texas drivers just more polite than other places?

I sure hope there are lights. If not

native texas drivers are perhaps more polite than your other drivers....but those "transplants" from NY and other such places....not so much.

I don't see how you'll have time to "slow down and look around the square" other than trying not to get hit from all sides. Also, seems like they left out the cars backing out of the street parking spaces into the single lane of on-coming traffic from behind. What were they thinking when this mess was approved?
Kind of reminds me of rats in a maze.
Good Luck. :S

Obviously a bogus video; I did not see one pickup truck! :P

In all seriousness, the first accident will have to be someone hitting a car backing out of the angle parking. Or someone will stop to let someone back out and they will get rear ended for their courtesy.

I just about cracked up when I saw that video. At least whoever did it seemed to have a sense of humor, or else they didn't realize they were putting so many near misses into it. I kept waiting to see the crash. Really though, if everyone stays away like they say they will, I think I will go that way. It may be the path less traveled and quickest way to get to the other side of town. Will just wait and see.

Just pulled this off the front page of the paper:
Motorists need to be aware of another important change that will impact downtown traffic when the change to two-way traffic occurs Sunday.

City construction crews will be rebuilding the section of Jefferson Street on the northwest corner of the square (the part in front of Alliance Bank), changing the angle of the street in an attempt to make traffic flow more smoothly. The work is expected to take about four months.

Unfortunately, that means when drivers come to the intersection to enter the square at Church and Jefferson streets, they won’t be able to turn right. They will be forced to turn left.

There’s a silver lining there, however — there won’t be any traffic coming from the right when drivers make that left turn. The construction will also block any traffic headed northbound on Gilmer Street to the square, and those vehicles will have to either turn onto Main or Connally streets and take a detour to Church Street.

Add this into the mix and it's really gonna be interesting driving downtown.

Well, I TRIED to drive around the square on my way to Main St. from Jefferson St. As someone else posted, you can't enter the square from Jefferson or Church. Totally barricaded for the work in front of Alliance Bank. Not confusing at all!! You can't do it!! So I took the street behind Alliance Bank and over to Davis.

I thought I'd check it out when there wasn't much traffic. Maybe another day.

What I can't imagine is how anyone believes this will help the downtown businesses. I know the Alliance construction is temporary, but I haven't heard anyone say they're going to go downtown MORE, only LESS.

My friend and I are survivors! Just for the thrill of it, we drove around part of the square and out south on Gilmer. Later, we drove back north on Gilmer. The barrels are great.
