What is the population of Sulphur Springs now days?
I'm reading about many new building projects in the SS schools......

Sure seems like there are a lot more activities, sports, and choices
classes for kids now than there were 50 years ago.
(That's great, by the way)
Are there that many more students?
Why let the truth stand in the way of a good fish story?

Stan, I don't know the numbers, but they are likely listed somewhere on this website;

www.ssisd.net/

It was nice to see the artist rendering of the new middle school on the home page. So far as I know, the new construction is concentrating on the new indoor multiuse facility. As far as I know, the bypass road south of town where the middle school will be constructed is still not open to traffic.

If I remember correctly the scheduled completion for the bypass was to be in February but as I pass every day and see the progress, or lack thereof, I'm sure that date has been pushed back. :(

any idea as to what will be done with the old middle school (which, in my day, was the old high school) on league?

how has the really old middle school (my old junior high) be utilized, if at all (due to age & probably disrepair)?

i thought i read on here in this forum something about Austin school being considered as a tear down? being replaced? what's up with that project? or did i get that one wrong?

All 3 good questions H&M. Just another example of disengagement between the School Board and the Taxpayers.

Let's see now....

We didn't have "Middle School", we went to "Jr. High School"
I did the 7th grade in the National Guard Armory that was located
in "City Park" next to the city swimming pool.

The population of Sul. Spgs. in those days was around 12,000 people.

(are your feeling old....... or really young as you read this?)

not really. i remember those buildings. although by the time i was a teen, the old armory building was vacant, i think. i seem to recall in my elementary years they had us all go through there to get our annual shots. i also recall as a teen going parking by the old armory building and by the swimming pool - i think there was a blue metal building close to the pool parking lot, but my memory's kinda fuzzy. :D

and i think the earliest or lowest population i can recall reading on the city limits sign was around the 12k mark.....

So, the voters voted with their emotions not the facts about the school bond.

I was also wondering about the population. There are so many empty buildings in SS.

H&M,

The Middle School on League St. will house 3rd and 4th grades. Austin will be closed, and Bowie, Lamar and Travis will house 1st and 2nd grades.

I think the old junior high you're asking about is the current Administration Bldg. on Connally St. As far as I've heard, no changes are planned for that building.

According to the information from the bond issue, Austin will house the Alternative Program, which is currently housed in the Administration Building. The Administration Building was the High School prior to it being the Middle School. The Middle School has been in the former High School for 32 years. When they do convert the Middle School to the 3/4 grade building, plans are to (for a lack of better term) "seal in" the walkway from the Education Building to the Academics Building.
