Nuevo Tango! at Mount Vernon Music Saturday, May 10

    MOUNT VERNON –Mount Vernon Music hosts an evening of romantic and passionate music in “Nuevo Tango!” Saturday, May 10, at 7:30  p.m.  in Mount Vernon Music Hall. Renowned Argentine musician Mariano Dugatkin, bandoneon, and the strings of the Orchard Ensemble will perform tangos by the great Astor Piazzolla, including Oblivion, Libertango, Adios Noniño and more. Music lovers won’t want to miss this chance to hear a true master of an instrument central to the tango tradition of Argentina and Uruguay, but rarely heard by American audiences.

A toast to forever friends – then and now

North East Texas Choral Society presents ‘Tis a Gift

    North East Texas Choral Society will perform its annual spring concert, ‘Tis a Gift, on Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. in Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.
    “The Celtic influence, the Appalachian sounds, the slave songs and the haunting tunes from the Civil War are all a part of this choral tour d’force,” promised NETC Musical Director Carol Allen. “We also give a nod to our Texas roots. We have a special guest, Vic Casad, playing along on several of the songs. He brings considerable banjo skills to such songs as ‘Turkey in the Straw,’ ‘O Susanna!’ ‘Soldiers’ Joy’ and ‘Buffalo Gals.’
    History professor and long-time choral society accompianist Ken Hanushek and Waylon Jordan, a long time member, have written a narrative for this program.
    “The narrative is a first for Choral Society,” Allen said.
    Allen encouraged parents to bring their children to hear the performance.
    “All ages will be delighted with this very well-known music,” Allen noted. “I have great hope that moms and dads will bring the youngsters to this concert. It is absolutely one of a kind.”
    The group will also be giving away two beautiful gift basekts from a list of people who have provided email addresses.
    “It is our way of saying thank you for providing us with your email addresses,” Allen explained.  
    Tickets are available from any NETCS member, at area banks or through the group’s website, www.netchoral.org/
    Advance tickets are $10 for adults or $12 at the door. Tickets for children 12 and younger are $5.
