Mavs clinch playoff spot with 130-101 win

DALLAS (AP) — With their spot in the playoffs secured, now the Dallas Mavericks can work on trying to avoid a first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points, a dozen in a row at one point, and Josh Howard overcame a bloody nose and swollen eye to add 13 points and a career-high seven steals as the Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz 130-101 on Wednesday night to clinch the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Fontenot, Ramirez, lead Cubs over Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — Cubs manager Lou Piniella joked with Ted Lilly that he picked the right night to have a mediocre start.

Lilly gave up five runs in five innings but it was good enough to earn the win in Chicago's 11-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.

Cruz, Andrus lead Rangers past Indians

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elvis Andrus reached the majors so soon because the Texas Rangers thought he could help shore up their infield defense.

The rookie showed Wednesday night that he can hit a little, too.

Andrus hit his first career homer, and Nelson Cruz added two solo shots and three RBIs to lead the Rangers past the Cleveland Indians 8-5.

"I said that the kid was not going to be an out," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "We've got nine guys in our lineup who can get you. Elvis is not going to hit many home runs. But every now and then, he's going to catch one."

AFLD says Armstrong violated its doping rules

PARIS (AP) — France's anti-doping agency accused Lance Armstrong of violating its rules Thursday for not fully cooperating with a drug tester and says it could punish the seven-time Tour de France champion.

Armstrong has denied misbehaving during a test of his hair, urine and blood on March 17. No banned substances were found.
