Rangers feel ready to contend in AL West

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — An impressive first half of the season is behind them; now, the Texas Rangers learn whether they have the makings of a championship contender.

The Rangers haven't been to the playoffs in 10 years. They finished second in the AL West last season, the first time they weren't third or fourth since 1999. But their losing record trailed the Los Angeles Angels by 21 games. Texas had the highest-scoring offense in the majors, along with the worst pitching staff.

Ramirez welcomed back with cheers in LA's 3-0 loss

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mannywood's main attraction was back in residence at Dodger Stadium and Manny Ramirez received a warm welcome, even if he wasn't any help.

Wandy Rodriguez combined with four relievers on an eight-hitter in the Houston Astros' 3-0 victory over Los Angeles on Thursday night, spoiling Ramirez's first game at home since his 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy ended.
