We want to express our sympathy to the family of Marvin Englander. He passed away last week and was buried on Sunday afternoon. Marvin was the brother-in-law of Dorothy and John Hadley.

We want to express our sympathy to the family of W.S. (Pete) Long. He passed away early Monday morning. His funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at West Oaks Funeral Home, and the visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Pete was a longtime educator and served as superintendent of North Hopkins ISD for 35 years

Tira and Sulphur Bluff Methodist Churches will have a combined Maundy Thursday Service on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Tira Methodist Church. The congregations would like to let everyone know that they are welcome to attend.

We want to express our sympathy to the family of Edna Smith. She passed away last Wednesday and her funeral was held on Saturday afternoon. Edna’s sons are Jimmy and Lee Joslin and her brother is Murray Smith.

William and Shirley Woodard were honored with a surprise 50th wedding anniversary dinner at Shumardi’s Steakhouse in Greenville on Saturday night. Helping them celebrate were Morris Smith of Cooper, Tommie Cook of Greenville, Charlie and Susan Vaughn; Amie, Landon and Rachel Davidson; Jana and Chris Rich; Kim and Randy Neal; Ashley Hailey; Lori and Dwayne Pope of Wolfe City; Andi and Kayla Williams; Jeremy Dixon of Sulphur Springs; and Gib McCullogh. William and Shirley will be married 50 years on March 28.


TIRA NEWS, March 18, 2009

The Tira City Council voted to cancel the May 9 election as no seats are opposed. Floyd Payton was the only person to sign up to fill the position of mayor, which is currently held by John Hadley, who announced that he would not be running for another term. Joyce Dodd, incumbent, and Janie Lewis filed as candidates for the two open seats on the council.
