MILLER GROVE NEWS Sept. 25, 2013

Aaah, wasn’t that cool front and rain nice the other day? I can’t believe that one morning on the way to work I actually had to wear a light jacket.

Lots going on in the community this time of year. The Hopkins County Fall Festival is under way and everyone seems to be very busy.

News in the community is somewhat scant this week. The school had their annual “Wax Museum” that was put on by the drama department this Monday. I have heard that the volleyball girls are really doing well this year but I haven’t gotten to see them play yet. I hope to get to see them before the season is over.

These last few days have really been scorchers with the triple-digit temperatures. I’m hoping that things will start to cool down a little and we will receive some rain since it is now September.

I’ve learned that sometimes it takes some thought to put things into perspective. As I drive down Interstate 30 each morning to work I notice a big flashing sign that reads, “1,965 Deaths Each Year On Texas Roadways.” The first couple of times I thought to myself that was a large number. Then one day I actually put that into perspective by thinking how many caskets that would be if they were lined up in rows in one area. I know that sounds morbid but it really makes you think of how many lives are actually lost each year; how many families have attended funerals of loved ones. It is a reality in all of our minds but sometimes, in our busy lives, we forget these things and how important it is to not drink and drive and how we all need to be cautious while driving on the roadways.
Well, this is the first week of school and the last week of August. Boy, time does fly. It seems like just yesterday that school was letting out for the summer. I hope the first week for all of the area schools goes well. This is the first time in a long time that I haven’t been part of Miller Grove School’s first day back from summer vacation. I already miss the students. I always enjoyed being around them and helping them create memories that would last a lifetime. From all reports I have heard things went well at Miller Grove on day number one. One day down, 179 to go!
Sunday afternoon I went to Gander Mountain, in Tyler, with Nathan Petty and Colten Baylus. Just my opinion but I like Bass Pro Shops better. The store is better looking and I think they have a little more variety. Besides that, it seems so much faster going to Garland on the interstate all the way instead of going to Tyler through all of the little towns along the way.
Congratulations to James Weaver who has been named the new District Wildlife Biologist for Jeff Davis and Reeves Counties in Texas. I know his family is proud. James was a 2006 graduate of MGHS.
Happy Birthday to Barbara (Spinks) Lynn, Nikki Regan, Shane Watson, & Neka Jo (Long) Mayo on Aug. 25; Donna (Millsap) Neal on Aug. 26; Richelle (Flecker) Johnson on Aug. 29; and Molly Millsap on Aug. 30.
Happy 47th wedding anniversary to Jim and Uleta (Sparks) Taylor on Aug. 26. Happy 24th anniversary to my uncle and aunt, Ronny & Kathy Darrow, on Aug. 30. Leon and Patsy (Johnson) Hallman will be celebrating 33 years of marriage on Aug. 31; congratulations to them!
