BRASHEAR NEWS Oct. 21, 2016

Has anyone else seen a lot of grasshoppers lately? We are seeing more now than we did all summer. We thought we would be through with them by now. At least, they have not been bothering the garden. We are still getting mustard greens, bell peppers, cucumbers, pear tomatoes and, of course, okra. We have some friends that hate to see us coming … with okra in the sack. Yep!

It’s Fall Festival time. We are cooking stew this year. Come by and see us at Site #150. This has become a fun family event for the Youngs. Hope everyone is enjoying this cool weather for the stew contest too.

A big shout out to our road crew from Precinct 1 for resurfacing County Road 1117. It is so nice. Thanks.

We saw the geese going over about two weeks ago. Let's hope the cool weather stays around for a while.

Did anyone see that mountain lion that was reported on FM 3389 this week? Take care of your small pets. Who knows what is out there in our part of the country.

Sorry about no news for a while and this being so short. Remember to call me at 903-612-8806; email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ; or drop by County Road 1119 for a visit. Thank you.

Whoa, that rain was nice! We had 1.4 inches of rain. Unexpected blessing!

BRASHEAR NEWS Aug. 5, 2016

Well, the news is hot — for the weather that is. Wow, can it get any hotter? Don't answer that. We got our hay cut this week, so let it rain now. Thank you, Jonah Massey, for getting this for us.

BRASHEAR NEWS July 15, 2016

Well, to start off, it was cool this morning. I love it.

BRASHEAR NEWS July 1, 2016

July 4 is fast approaching. There are a lot of happenings around Sulphur Springs and Brashear. On July the 2nd there will be the annual Symphony Celebration on Celebration Plaza. Festivities start at 7:45 p.m. with a concert, then wonderful fireworks. I read that the fireworks are going to be closer this year, but do not know where the best seat will be for the show. Alliance Bank is hosting a Watermelon Eating Contest over by the bank. They are taking volunteers so show up a little early and get over there to compete. Good luck. Remember to bring chairs, water, blankets or anything you think you might need to enjoy a really great time.

July 4 is also a special time for Brashear. Brashear Baptist Church has been hosting a great get-together to honor the veterans from our own Brashear. There will be water slides, games, music and, of course, food. If you did not know by now, Brashear has some of the best cooks. Come on down and join the whole community in celebrating the 4th. There will also be hamburgers and hot dogs with all of the trimmings. I will be there and would love to say hello. Just walk up and introduce yourself.

It is hot, but the garden is still producing. We have had a lot of luck with butternut squash this year. I have made the sweet Amish pickles (4 quarts and 5 pints), then made hillbilly cast iron salsa last weekend (8 pints). This is exceptional. If you like sweet salsa, you should try it. Cantaloupes are just now starting to make. Tom says they are really good.

I want to ask prayers for Barbara Stewart. She fell down this week and sure has bruised her face. No, Sunny didn't hit her. That is just a joke, Sunny. So pray for fast healing for Barbara.

I have a friend who is looking for a two- to three-bedroom place to rent. She is living in a travel trailer without air conditioning currently. She can afford around $600 a month. Please call and let me know if you know of a place for her to live.

Thanks to all of you who read Brashear News. I really appreciate your comments. Take care in this heat. The Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center is handing out fans for the elderly who need a way to keep cool. Please call me if you could use a box fan to help keep cool.

Remember, I loved to hear from you to share your special news. Call me at 903-612-8806, email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or stop by County Road 1119 for a cold glass of water or lemonade. I love to visit.
