July 4 is fast approaching. There are a lot of happenings around Sulphur Springs and Brashear. On July the 2nd there will be the annual Symphony Celebration on Celebration Plaza. Festivities start at 7:45 p.m. with a concert, then wonderful fireworks. I read that the fireworks are going to be closer this year, but do not know where the best seat will be for the show. Alliance Bank is hosting a Watermelon Eating Contest over by the bank. They are taking volunteers so show up a little early and get over there to compete. Good luck. Remember to bring chairs, water, blankets or anything you think you might need to enjoy a really great time.
July 4 is also a special time for Brashear. Brashear Baptist Church has been hosting a great get-together to honor the veterans from our own Brashear. There will be water slides, games, music and, of course, food. If you did not know by now, Brashear has some of the best cooks. Come on down and join the whole community in celebrating the 4th. There will also be hamburgers and hot dogs with all of the trimmings. I will be there and would love to say hello. Just walk up and introduce yourself.
It is hot, but the garden is still producing. We have had a lot of luck with butternut squash this year. I have made the sweet Amish pickles (4 quarts and 5 pints), then made hillbilly cast iron salsa last weekend (8 pints). This is exceptional. If you like sweet salsa, you should try it. Cantaloupes are just now starting to make. Tom says they are really good.
I want to ask prayers for Barbara Stewart. She fell down this week and sure has bruised her face. No, Sunny didn't hit her. That is just a joke, Sunny. So pray for fast healing for Barbara.
I have a friend who is looking for a two- to three-bedroom place to rent. She is living in a travel trailer without air conditioning currently. She can afford around $600 a month. Please call and let me know if you know of a place for her to live.
Thanks to all of you who read Brashear News. I really appreciate your comments. Take care in this heat. The Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center is handing out fans for the elderly who need a way to keep cool. Please call me if you could use a box fan to help keep cool.
