Rise in number of jobs for local residents keeps Hopkins County's unemployment rate lowest in area

Texas lost more jobs than any other U.S. state in August, but employers in Hopkins County did their part to keep people off the jobless rolls last month. Thanks to a rise in the number of jobs available to Hopkins County residents, the unemployment rate for August was 6.4 percent, well below the 8 percent reported by the state of Texas. Moreover, the local rate is dwarfed by the national average of 9.7 percent.

Persistence and luck help HCSO investigator crack credit card abuse case

Sometimes, solving crime is simply a matter of luck — being at the right place at the right time. That’s exactly what happened to Hopkins County Sheriff’s Investigator Lewis Tatum Monday. He had followed leads to another county, trying to track down a suspect in a credit card abuse case. Just when he thought he could go no further in the investigation, the suspect appeared at a store he’d stopped at before heading home.

Popular winners at the Quilt Show

Jan Ainsworth of Campbell is awarded the Grace Lindley Hamby Memorial award for her “Snake River” quilt at the 10th annual quilt show for the Hopkins County Fall Festival. The award was provided by Deanna Hasten in memory of her mother. Ainsworth also recieved one of two Viewer’s Choice Awards presented by the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild for “Snake River.”

Lone Star Quilt Guild President Judy VanWinkle of Sulphur Springs is awarded the Louise Garmon Stripling Memorial award for her “Miss Breezy” quilt at the 10th annual quilt show during the Hopkins County Fall Festival. The award was provided by Stripling’s family. Van Winkle also received one of two Viewer’s Choice Awards presented by the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild for “Miss Breezy.”
