Piggly Wiggly reopening Aug. 12; new proprietors say it will be only franchise operating in Texas

The Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Main Street will reopen next month under new owners who anticipate offering a variety of additional products at a lower cost. The Sulphur Springs store will be the only Piggly Wiggly franchise open in Texas, according to Jimmy Whittington, who now co-owns the business with his wife, Donna, and son Matthew.


Eighteen horses turned over to rescue agency

A local animal rescue group Monday was awarded 18 malnourished horses rescued from a Brashear property July 18. It was the second time since May that Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society aided Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office in rescuing neglected horses and were awarded custody of the animals, according to Kim Simpson, foster home and neglect investigator for the Bluebonnet organization.

Hopkins County officials Monday voted to hire a Texas Agrilife Extension Service specialist with a doctoral degree to serve as the county’s next agent for agriculture.
