Man, 22, and teen, 19, rescued after truck driven around barriers and into water

A Sulphur Springs man learned the hard way Monday that barriers marking closed roads are there for a reason; the “road closed” barricades on FM 71 west at the Hopkins-Delta  County line, he soon learned, are to prevent vehicles and the people in them from becoming trapped in a flood.

Mr. Hopkins County and his royal court

Freddie Taylor (center) won the title of Mr. Hopkins County at the Hopkins County Man Pageant Saturday. Dave Graves (right) won first runner-up and Tory Humphries (left) was named second runner-up. All proceeds from the pageant and auction go to the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial Fund.
