Lady Cats beat Marshall in soccer

    MARSHALL — Sulphur Springs started the girls District 15-5A race off with a bang, winning in Marshall Tuesday night.
    The Lady Cats won 3-1 over Marshall. Sulphur Springs scored two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead.
    Each team had a goal in the final half.
    Esmeralda Sanchez had two goals. The first goal came off an assist by Faith Singleton.
    Blanca Torrez assisted on the second Sanchez goal.
    Myranda Pierce also scored for the Lady Cats. Estrella Resendiz was credited with an assist.
    Abbi Hale in goal, allowed just one score to record her first district win at goalkeeper.
    In junior varsity action, Sulphur Springs won 3-0.
    Goals came from Cindy Arellano, Gracie Boyer and Vanessa Diosdado.
    Boyer also had an assist as did Mileenta Zirretta.
    Mandy Echkardt had one save in goal.
    Elizabeth Arms at goalie made two saves.
    The two goalkeepers combined for a shutout of Marshall.
    The Lady Cats will take on Mount Pleasant Friday in another key road game in district play.
    The junior varsity will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday prior to the varsity game at 7 p.m.

8 Wildcats on academic all-state team

    Sulphur Springs athletic director Greg Owens announced that eight football players have received all-state academic honors.
    Seth Harred, offensive lineman, was named to the elite team.

    The Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats are involved in important district basketball games today.
    The foe is longtime rival and district power, Texas High.


Lady Cats begin softball workouts

Wet conditions and brisk winds forced the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats indoors for their first official softball practice Friday.
    The Lady Cats all seemed enthusiastic about swinging bats and fielding grounders, even on fake green turf.
