Lady Panthers sweep area playoffs

MERIT — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers ended a best-of-three game series in three and a half hours.

North Hopkins, riding the arms of pitchers Chastin Smiddy and Jessica Harry, sweep the Class 1A area playoffs Wednesday at Bland High School field, winning by scores of 7-0 and 10-0.

The twin shutouts are nothing new for the successful Lady Panther program under Jim Westbrook. The squad came into the game with a first round bye after making their eighth consecutive playoff berth.


Saltillo playoff run ends

PRINCETON—The skies might have finally been clear, but Saltillo did not see a ray of light until the third inning in Wednesday night’s area playoff competition against District 9-A champion Lindsay Lady Knights.

“We just made too many mental errors,” explained Saltillo Lady Lion head softball coach Mimi Kempenaar. “It took us too long to get started. I am very proud of my girls for what they have accomplished this year.”


Schools participate in regional track meet

For Cumby, Miller Grove, Yantis, Sulphur Bluff, and North Hopkins, this upcoming meet was almost not. If the UIL had not relaxed their intentions to cancel the regional track meets these local athletes would not be sweating. With the reinstatement of the Region III-A track meet came changes to the location. The meet host will be Palestine ISD instead of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.


Making It All Add Up, Como-Pickton awaits regional track meet in Stephenville

With the weather finally cooperating, the track athletes at Como-Pickton have been hard at work. And the UIL has been back in action, releasing the hold that was put on competition due to the swine flu scare. In accordance, UIL has released the performance list for Region II-2A. C-P coaches have been crunching the numbers to see how the competition stacks up against current results.
On Friday, May 8, Como-Pickton Eagle Trevor Cagle got the call. The call to compete in an additional event—high jump. Caddo Mills Fox Hunter Greene had a conflict with baseball that caused him to pull out of the event. Greene placed third at district at Grand Saline; he had a seed mark height of 5-6. Cagle jumped with a clearance of 5-6 placing fourth, with misses determining the final outcome of the places. “We will have to get in some high jump workout today,” C-P Eagles head track coach Greg Roller said excitedly.


SS, area teams in playoffs

Playoff action for Sulphur Springs and other teams in the area will be fast and furious.

The rain is out of the forecast at least for a day or two allowed teams to get games in.

The softball and baseball teams both have playoff contests coming up.

The Wildcats will play Henderson in a best-of-three series opening Thursday.
