Yantis Owls burst predictions, stride through injuries for playoffs

Yantis Owls will face off with the Trenton Tigers in round ball playoff action at 7 p.m. today in Commerce for the bi-district title for Class 1A Division I. The winner will go on to play the Avery Bulldogs in next round for the area title.
“We were not even predicted to make the playoffs by the TABC (Texas Association of Basketball Coaches),” said Yantis Owls head basketball coach and athletic director Jack Bowles.


SS girls lose 4-0 to NL

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats lost 4-0 in home soccer action against North Lamar Monday night.
“They’re, big, physical and manage the field well,” said SS girls soccer coach Joel Bailey following the loss.

SS golf teams in action at Mt. Pleasant
The Sulphur Springs JV boys golf team opened the spring season off with a third place finish at Mount Pleasant.
Atlanta took first place followed by the Texas High JV and the Sulphur Spring JV in third.


Galloway hits second career 600 series in league play

Scoring was down a bit at Classic Lanes during the week ending Feb. 20, but not for Sybil Galloway.
Galloway, bowling with the Easy Money team on lanes 5-6 in the Sunday Night Mixed on Feb. 15, fired her second career 600 series.
Averaging 153 to open play, Galloway strung games of 189-226-205 for a solid 620 series to lead the women’s scratch scoring. She also led the high handicap set for the evening with a 263 game and 731 series. Her first 600 came last year.
Among the men bowlers, two shooters accounted for three 700 series scores. Two came from consistent Tarry Davison, one in the Sunday Night Mixed and another in the Thursday Men’s Commercial. Allan Hague contributed the third seven of the week in the Tuesday Night Mixed league.


Wildcats score 3-2 shoot-out win over Paris

Sulphur Springs had their backs against the wall in a shootout, Fernando Arellano came through with the winning kick to give the Wildcats the win after they had tied at 2-all in regulation.
