Fourth Quarter Blues: Texas High closes with 17-4 burst to take District 13-4A win

For three quarters the Sulphur Springs Wildcats basketball team was smoothly rolling along like a nice sweet song as they held the lead. They were hitting every note and most of the baskets.

Then came the fourth quarter. The Texas High Tigers outscored Sulphur Springs 17-4 in the final period to take a 57-45 comeback win over the Wildcats here Tuesday night. Now the Wildcats are signing the blues about a possible win which slipped away.


Lady Cats win 34-32; tie for second place

TEXARKANA  — The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats put just enough distance between themselves and the Texas High Lady Tigers on Tuesday night to give themselves a little breathing room in the district basketball standings.

The Lady Cats overcome an uneven first-half offensive performance to hold off the Lady Tigers 34-32 in a key District 13-4A contest.


Lady Cats sweep two soccer tilts in Athens

ATHENS — Teams from Sulphur Springs swept two non-district soccer games played Tuesday at Bruce Field.

In varsity action, Sulphur Springs took a 2-1 win over the Lady Hornets.

“It was a case of new faces making a difference and familiar faces making their return,” said Jesus DeLeon, Sulphur Springs Lady Cats head soccer coach. “Sophomore Berenise Castañeda scored her first goal of the year to open the score. We  played very well the whole half generating shooting opportunities and keeping Athens under constant pressure. After the half, Athens tied up in the first minutes of the half. We then regained our composure and continued to be dangerous on the attack.”
