DENTON — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats fired a first-round 329, for ninth place 36 strokes off the pace at the Region II, Class 4A golf regional tournament.

The event, held at Robson Ranch, was led after one round by Frisco Centennial’s 293 score which was four strokes ahead of McKinney’s second place 297.
Sulphur Springs individual golf scores include:
Chance Byrd............................80
Cort Walker..............................81
Alex Buchanan........................83
Kason Childress.......................85
Daniel Dixon............................91
The Wildcats are behind 13-4A champion Pine Tree a team which turned in a 321 score.
“It’s a tough field and we knew that going in,” said Sulphur Springs head boys golf coach Ross Funk. “I was pleased with our 329 score. We can do a little better, we would like to try to break 320. That would be our low score for the year.”
Funk continued, “The course got a little windy at the end of the first round, it’s supposed to be moderate weather today. It would be nice to move up in the standings. We are not really shooting for one particular place, but to break 320 would be great. That’s our goal. It will depend on the how we play and the conditions.”
Sulphur Springs teed off at 9:10 a.m. today at the 6,725-yard, par 72 Wildhorse Ranch Course for the final round of the event.
