That little ol' farmers market on Main Street just keeps pulling in the votes in the "Love Your Farmers Market" online contest, enough so that there are only three such markets in the great state of Texas ahead of it.
Bayou City Farmers Market in Houston has the most votes at 402, followed by Sunset Valley Farmers Market in Austin (325 votes) and the Dallas Farmers Market with 242 votes. Next up is Sulphur Springs’ Main Street Farmers Market with 167 votes as of Thursday morning, Aug. 13.
That’s ahead of the Houston Farmers Market (147 votes) and the Austin Farmers Market with 135 votes, and finally the Midland Downtown Farmers’ Market, which has 130 votes.
(I’d like to take the time to point out that Midland is the runt of that litter with a city population of 106,561, or about seven times bigger than Sulphur Springs.)
One other thing: That 167 votes is good enough for 67th place in the country. Seeing as how the vote totals for the local market have risen by about 140 in the three weeks, it's not unreason able to think that the Main Street Farmers' Market could yet crack the top 50 in the United States in this contest. Currently, number 50 has 200 votes, and with voting open until Sept. 17, there's plenty of time to recruit more supporters.People age 18 or over with Internet access can vote in the contest, which began June 19 and ends Sept. 17, by visiting www.care2.com/farmersmarket and clicking on “Find Your Market.”
