The North Hopkins Class of 1965 has scheduled a reunion for Aug. 15 at 4 p.m. at the White Oak Café. They would like for any former students of that class (not just the graduating class) to make plans to attend. Ethan, Madi, Bryson, Owen and Cade Vickery spent the day and night with Sherry Smiddy and Powell Vickery this last week. Even with all the rain, the kids went swimming and rode four-wheelers all day. Daylee Fite enjoyed having them over to play with, and she went home with them to play the next day. Sherry and Powell spent the day on Sunday at Lake Cypress and visited with Samantha and Gaylord Whiting at their home on the lake.

The Tira Volunteer Fire Department is planning to participate in the "Hot August Nights" barbecue cook-off at the Civic Center on Aug. 22. The event will be from noon to 7 p.m. and will include music, food, fun and games. Everyone is encouraged to attend and enjoy the food and fun and support the local fire departments.

Malcolm, Tiffany, Landon, Morgan, Kenden and Jaidyn Joslin, Delayne Vaughn, Chelsie Edwards, and Chip and I left on Wednesday for Branson. While there we enjoyed the rides and shows at Silver Dollar City and the swimming pool and other amenities at the Silverleaf Holiday Hills Resort. We had a delicious meal at Shorty Small’s (famous for their baby-back ribs) on Friday night and celebrated Delayne’s birthday, which was on August 1st and Malcolm’s birthday, which was on Aug. 4. On Saturday night Chip, Delayne and I visited The Landing, along the river, and watched the fountains and fire display during a musical concert on the boardwalk. We all toured the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum on Sunday before returning home that night. We did experience some rain during our trip, but the weather was mostly cool and pleasant.

Due to shortage of space this week we’ll pick up with John Long’s journey into “Switzerland and the Valley of a Thousand Waterfalls” in a future News-Telegram.
