“This ceremony is named in honor of Dr. Joe Minter. He served faithfully over the years in many capacities throughout the county. He is the former county judge of Hopkins County, as well as former superintendent in the Como-Pickton school district. Currently, Joe is retired and enjoys life with his family and friends. Dr. Minter has shaped the minds of countless students and individuals over the years. We are pleased to have this ceremony in his honor,” noted ETAALC President Dr. M. LaVelle Hendricks.
Minter taught college in Mississippi, retiring as a professor. He served on more than one occasion as Como-Pickton school superintendent, is a Korean War veteran, active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, and has served as commander of Hopkins County Military Coalition. He also has served on the local Crime Stoppers Board. He was elected Hopkins County Judge in 1994, served on the Ark-Tex Council of Governments Executive Committee and has been credited as the driving force behind the creation of the Northeast Texas Rural Rail Transportation District. In 2008, Minter was selected to receive the Citizen of the Year award at the 82nd Annual Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Membership Banquet.
Saturday evening, 30 students and educators from Como-Pickton and Saltillo school districts will be honored for their “outstanding achievements, encouraging spirit, community service involvement, love of the classroom, and the high standards that you have set for yourself that led our committee to select you after our exhaustive search,” Hendricks noted.
